How to prune potted grapes

Pruning time for potted grapes

It is generally more appropriate to prune potted grapes after their natural leaf fall and before the sap flow period in the spring of the following year. If you want to use the pruned branches of potted grapes for cuttings, it is best to choose a newly sprouted branch about 15 cm long with at least 2 buds on it, and then directly insert the branch into the prepared soil.

How to prune the branches and leaves of potted grapes

If inflorescences appear on potted grapes, they need to be pruned in time. Pinch off the inflorescence when 3-5 leaves are left, pinch off the developing branches when 3-5 leaves are left, and pinch off the newly grown side shoots when 1-2 leaves are left.

When the potted grapes bear fruit, they need to be pruned back in winter. It is sufficient to keep about two strong branches on the plant, and the buds must be full.

Tips for pruning potted grapes

After years of fruiting, the fruiting part of potted grapes will move upwards, resulting in a bare bottom. Once this happens, you can use the new shoots that sprout from the hidden buds at the bottom of the perennial branches and vines to cultivate new fruiting branches as a means of cutting back and renewing.
