Winter melon pollination time and method

Winter melon pollination time and method

Pollination method of wax gourd

Winter melon is generally pollinated by insects or wind, and artificial pollination usually has a higher success rate.

Characteristics of successful pollination: Within 2-3 days after pollination of winter melon, the female flowers will change from growing upwards to gradually drooping, and the melon will gradually grow larger, which means that pollination is successful.

Best time for pollination of winter melon

The best time to pollinate wax gourd is between 9 and 11 in the morning. The pollen is highly active and the stigma is moist, making it easy for the pollen to stick to the stigma, thus ensuring the quality of pollination.

Winter melon pollination method

Winter melons should be pollinated from female flowers with evenly spread flowers and undamaged melons at the bottom of the flowers to ensure the quality of pollination. Just sprinkle the pollen of the male flowers on the female flowers.

Pollination is carried out between 9 and 11 in the morning. This is because the temperature in the greenhouse is between 25℃ and 30℃ at this time, and the humidity in the greenhouse is appropriate. The female flowers have just opened, and there is more mucus on the stigma, which makes it easy for the pollen to stick, thus ensuring the quality of pollination.

If farmers pollinate in the afternoon, the pollen on the male flowers will gradually decay and turn brown, and the stigmas on the female flowers will gradually dry out, leading to pollination failure or poor pollination, resulting in deformed fruits.
