Mustard Planting Time and Method

Mustard planting time

Mustard likes a warm environment and can be sown in spring and autumn. The best time for spring sowing is early March to early April, and the best time for autumn sowing is late September to early October. The climatic conditions in these two periods are suitable for the growth of shepherd's purse, and the survival rate is very high.

How to grow mustard greens

1. Site selection

Before sowing mustard, you must choose a suitable plot of land. It is best to plant it in sandy loam with high fertility, good aeration, loose soil, good drainage and irrigation capacity, and slightly more humus. This is beneficial to the growth of shepherd's purse.

2. Land preparation

After selecting a planting field, use agricultural machinery to deep plow the soil to a depth of 30 cm to 34 cm. After deep plowing, apply 4,500 catties to 5,000 catties of fermented manure per mu. Then turn the soil once and plow the manure into the ground to increase soil fertility. After land preparation, make ridges with a width of 1.3 m to 1.5 m, and the width of the ridge furrows should be about 25 cm to 30 cm.

3. Planting seeds

Dig holes and sow seeds on the bed surface with a plant spacing of 18 cm to 20 cm and a row spacing of 20 cm to 30 cm. 2-3 seeds can be sown in each hole. Cover the seeds with soil after sowing, water them thoroughly, and cover them with a layer of straw or plastic film. Remove the covering after the mustard seedlings emerge from the soil.

Precautions for growing mustard greens

When the mustard seedlings begin to emerge from the soil, you should check the emergence of the seedlings frequently. After 80% of the seedlings have emerged, you can thin out the seedlings. Remove the weak and diseased seedlings in each hole and leave only one strong seedling. If no seedlings grow in some sowing holes, transplant the extra seedlings in other sowing holes into the holes where seedlings are missing.
