Sweet potatoes can be planted in spring, and seedlings can be started from late January in early spring, especially in warm areas in the south. They can also be planted in summer, specifically around June. The temperature at this time has stabilized, as long as it is maintained above 15 degrees. In addition, sowing in August in autumn is also possible. At this time, you should choose varieties with strong cold resistance.

1. Site selection

Before raising sweet potato seedlings, you should choose sandy or sandy soil with a deep soil layer, rich in organic matter and good drainage. The soil in such plots is loose and has good drainage, which is conducive to the growth of sweet potatoes. You can renovate the soil in advance and apply sufficient base fertilizer to improve fertility.

2. Seed selection

If you want to increase the yield of sweet potatoes, you must choose the right varieties, and choose long, uniform, medium-sized, straight, smooth-skinned, pest-free, and plump sweet potatoes as seeds to cultivate.

3. Planting seeds

Sweet potatoes can be sown in loose soil, not too crowded, and leaving appropriate space. Cover them with a layer of soil about 5 cm thick, then water them to keep them moist and provide a semi-shaded environment.

Things to note when planting yams

Sweet potatoes do not have very high requirements for fertilizer and water, but they still need to be fertilized. In the early stages, the plants require more nitrogen fertilizer, mainly because the growth of stems and leaves requires the support of nitrogen fertilizer, so nitrogen fertilizer must be used during this period. Phosphorus fertilizer is needed when the tubers are growing, and potassium fertilizer generally needs to be added one month before harvest.
