Onions are usually harvested in May and June, when the onion leaves slowly turn yellow from bottom to top, the pseudostem becomes soft, the bulb stops expanding and enters dormancy, indicating that they need to be harvested in time.

Onions are native to West Asia and grow all over the world. In my country, they are mainly produced in Fengxian County, Jiuquan County, Wuwei County, Jinxiang County, Shang County, Pingdu County, Yutai County, Xichang County, Dongchuan County, Yuanmou County and other places. Of course, they are also grown in Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Jilin, Heilongjiang and other places. Most onions are planted in autumn and then harvested in the spring of the second year.

Onion planting time and key points

The most suitable time to plant onions is early September. Generally, they are planted by sowing. The temperature is maintained between 15-25 degrees. Choose a mixed soil containing vermiculite, garden soil, sandy soil, and humus. Before sowing, soak the seeds in hot water for 3 to 4 hours and rub them to remove the wax layer.

When sowing onions, you need to spread the seeds evenly in the soil, keeping a distance of 10 cm between the seeds, cover them with a layer of 0.8 cm fine stone sand, compact the soil, water them in time, do not water them thoroughly, and wait until the seeds germinate before watering them a second time.

When fertilizing onions, you need to wait until the plant height grows to 15 to 20 cm, and then apply a small amount of well-rotted compound fertilizer or farmyard manure. About a month later, you can transplant them. Before transplanting, you can apply well-rotted farmyard manure or diluted cake fertilizer water to the bottom of the soil.
