Pruning time of thornberry

Barbary amaranth has the habit of blooming at the top of branches, so if you do a good job of pruning, you can promote more branches and more flowers in the plant. Barbary amaranth pruning can be done in spring. When pruning, you should avoid rainy days and choose a sunny day to prune.

If the pruning is done on consecutive rainy days, the cuts of the barberry will easily become infected. Moreover, it is necessary to disinfect and sterilize the plant after each pruning and place it in a well-ventilated semi-shaded environment, which is beneficial to the healing of the wound.

Methods of pruning thornberry

1. Pruning during the budding period

During the growth process of Barbary Amaranthus, proper pruning can encourage the plant to bloom more. Pruning during the budding period is mainly based on pinching, which can better control the height. When the branch is 10 centimeters long, the top part should be cut off by about 5 centimeters to promote the growth of the branch.

2. Modeling and pruning

It is important to prune the barberry early in its young stage to allow the plant to form a skeleton as soon as possible. When the side branches grow to the desired height, they can be thinned out. When there are 4 to 5 branches, they need to be shaped and pruned. Excessively long branches should be shortened to keep the plant in a spherical or basket shape.

3. Pruning after flowering

Pruning the barberry after flowering can promote a second flowering effect. Generally, the overly long and unevenly growing branches are cut short, keeping the length at about 8 to 10 centimeters. The remaining flowers and dead branches are also cut off, and the old and thick branches can be shortened.
