Carrot Planting and Harvest Times

Carrot Planting and Harvest Times

Carrot planting time

It is best to sow carrots in spring or autumn, no later than the beginning of autumn. It is best to sow in the morning or evening to increase the seedling rate.

Carrot harvest time

Carrots are usually sown in early spring in February and mature and harvested in May-July. They can also be sown in July and mature and harvested in November-December. Due to different temperature differences and sowing times in different regions, the maturity time also varies.

For example, in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, seeds should be sown in early August and mature in late November. In Guangdong and Fujian, seeds should be sown from August to October and mature in winter. In northern Xinjiang, seeds should be sown in early June and harvested in October. In North China, seeds should be sown in early to mid-July and mature in November.

Key points for high-yield carrot planting

1. Seed treatment

Carrots are generally planted by direct seeding, but if you want to increase the germination rate, you can also use the seed soaking method. The specific operation is to soak the seeds in cold water for 3-4 hours, drain them, put them in a cotton bag, and place them in an environment of 25 degrees for germination.

2. Planting

Draw furrows on the top of the ridge with a row spacing of 15 cm. The depth of the furrows should be 1-2 cm. Moisten the soil in advance, then sow the seeds in the soil, cover with a thin layer of soil, making sure the seeds are not exposed, and then cover with wheat straw or hay to keep warm.

3. Thinning and finalizing seedlings

When the seedlings grow 1-2 true leaves, they should be thinned out for the first time. The second thinning should be done after 3-4 true leaves grow out. Note that seedlings with poor growth should be discarded. The plant spacing should be 15cm when thinning out. Thinning should be combined with tillage, weeding and loosening the soil, and row sowing is preferred.

4. Prevent and control pests and diseases

Black leaf blight and black rot often endanger the health of carrots. Black leaf blight is mostly caused by drought, so methyl thiophanate can be used for prevention and treatment. Black rot is mostly caused by high temperature and heavy rain, so quicklime can be used to disinfect the soil. Carrots are also often threatened by pests such as aphids and cabbage loopers, so high-efficiency and low-toxic pesticides can be used for spraying and prevention.
