How many seasons of cowpea are planted in a year?

Cowpeas can be planted twice a year, which can be divided into summer sowing and autumn sowing. In summer, they can be planted from mid-April to late June, and in autumn, they can be sown from August to September. When planting cowpeas in autumn, you must pay attention to temperature changes and grasp the timing.

Cowpea Planting Conditions

1. Temperature

Cowpea has good heat resistance but not frost resistance. It can grow normally at a high temperature of 35℃. The minimum temperature for germination is 8-12℃. The growth of cowpea will be inhibited when the temperature is below 10℃. When the temperature is 0-5℃, cowpea may die. When planted in the open field in northern regions, the harvesting should be completed before frost.

2. Moisture

Cowpea requires an appropriate amount of water. It should not be too moist during the seed development period, so as not to reduce the seed germination rate and even cause root rot and seedling death. When it comes to flowering and pod formation, the soil humidity must be controlled appropriately. Too much water in the soil will easily cause flowers and pods to fall off, which is not conducive to the growth of the root system.

Cowpea harvest time

The process of planting and harvesting cowpea can be divided into four cycles: germination, seedling, vine extension and flowering and podding. The harvesting time will vary for different varieties. Early-maturing varieties require 50-60 days, mid-maturing varieties require 60-70 days, and late-maturing varieties require 70-80 days before they can be put on the market.
