How to plant potatoes? The latest potato cultivation technology and management methods

Potatoes, also known as potatoes, sweet potatoes, and Dutch potatoes, are plants of the Solanaceae family. Potato tubers are edible and have high nutritional value. They also have high yields and are important food crops like wheat, rice, and corn. As long as you master the potato planting techniques, it is not difficult to plant potatoes.

Potato planting method

1. Land preparation and fertilization

Potatoes are suitable for planting on loose, easily irrigated, organic-rich, and flat sandy loam plots. The land should be prepared after the previous crop is harvested, and tillage should be combined with fertilization before planting. A balanced fertilization method can be used.

2. Seed selection and processing

Choose high-yield virus-free potatoes with complete tubers, no pests and diseases, shallow buds and smooth skin as seed potatoes. Cut the seed potatoes into pieces 3 to 5 days before sowing, keeping 1 to 2 strong buds on each piece. After cutting, mix the tubers, talcum powder and thiophanate-methyl and place them in a well-ventilated place.

3. Germination

After the seed potatoes have been spread out to cool for 1 to 2 days, soak them in 1 to 2 units of humic acid for 10 minutes. Pick them up and bury them in a moist sand bed. Cover them with a film to germinate them. Germination of the seed potatoes can effectively break their dormancy, speed up and evenly germinate them, and reduce the risk of them rotting in the soil.

4. Planting seeds

Potatoes can be planted when the average daily temperature is 15 to 25 degrees. When sowing, the planting density should be arranged reasonably according to the fertility and potato variety. Under normal cultivation conditions, about 6,000 potatoes are planted per mu or 120 to 150 kilograms of seeds are used per mu.

Potato planting tips

After planting potatoes, water them in time when the weather is dry to keep the soil moist and ensure emergence of seedlings. Increase the amount of watering appropriately in the later stage to ensure sufficient water in the soil. When the stems and leaves stop growing, the demand for water will increase, so pay attention to replenishing water to prevent late maturity of potatoes or reduce yield.
