The best time to prune bayberry trees and how to prune them

Bayberry trees need to be pruned regularly. Proper pruning of branches can adjust the balance between growth and fruiting, control the height of the tree, balance the fruiting rate in alternate years, improve the quality of the fruit, facilitate management, etc. It can also make the bayberry tree more ventilated and light-permeable, which is conducive to growth.

Bayberry tree pruning time

The pruning time for bayberry trees is generally from June to July in summer , when large branches and strong branches that disrupt the tree shape need to be sawed off. The spring pruning time is from March to April , when small branches are pruned, mainly pruning some dense branches, dead branches, and branches that bear too many fruits. The autumn pruning time is November , when some overly nutritious and overgrown branches and autumn shoots are mainly pruned.

Bayberry tree pruning method

1. Prune branches

After unloading, upright branches, branches that are out of place, hinder the tree shape, branches that are beginning to decline, or branches that are injured should be pruned back. Normally, upright or densely growing new shoots should be removed in time, and weak fruit-bearing branches should be recultivated after removal.

2. Retraction

After unloading, some perennial branch sequences or long branches should be cut back to appropriate positions so that they can sprout new shoots on the remaining stumps and be cultivated into fruiting branch groups. The remaining stumps should be shortened.

3. Picking

In normal times, for those new shoots with strong growth potential, the tips should be removed in time to control their growth. Those that are in the wrong position or have too many sprouts should be removed in time.
