Can geraniums be pruned in summer? When is the best time to prune?

Pruning the branches of geraniums can, on the one hand, reduce the loss of nutrients, on the other hand, make the geraniums more ventilated and light-permeable, and on the other hand, it can also shorten the geranium plants, making the plant shape more beautiful.

Summer pruning of geraniums

Geraniums can also be pruned in summer, but the time of pruning must be controlled well. It cannot be done when it is particularly hot in summer. It can be pruned in late summer and early autumn. The survival rate will be higher. The temperature and humidity at this time are not particularly high, which can allow the wound to heal well and prevent black rot.

How to prune geraniums in summer

The first step is to prepare a pair of large sterilized scissors and cut off the overgrown branches, overcrowded branches, diseased branches and weak branches of the geranium from the base, leaving only 3 to 5 main branches that are evenly distributed and growing healthily near the base. Then shorten the main branches and other side branches, leaving only the strong side buds on the side branches.

The second step : If the geraniums you are planting are seedlings, you need to top and pinch them when they grow to 10 cm. After new branches grow out, pinch them 1 to 2 more times until a good-looking plant shape is formed.

Step 3. If you find that the wound of the geranium turns yellow after pruning, it means that it is infected with bacteria. You should cut off the yellow part in time and re-apply carbendazim to the new wound to prevent the wound from turning black and the branch from dying.
