Is it easy to plant trees in winter?

Trees transplanted in winter can survive, and large trees transplanted in winter can quickly take root . For example, deciduous trees and flowering shrubs such as poplar, willow, sycamore, pagoda tree, ash, sycamore, and Ligustrum lucidum have a relatively high survival rate when transplanted in winter. However, these trees are not 100% likely to survive.

However, not all trees can survive. Only when the environment is suitable can trees survive. It is generally difficult for trees to survive in winter in northern regions. It is more appropriate to choose spring.

Moreover, fruit tree seedlings can be transplanted in winter . Because the temperature is low in winter, fruit tree seedlings usually stop growing and enter a dormant state, and their physiological activities are basically stagnant.

Transplanting will cause little damage to the fruit tree seedlings and avoid stress reactions. However, you must pay attention to the specific time when transplanting, and wait until the leaves have completely fallen and the soil has not yet frozen.

Things to note when transplanting trees

Tree selection

① Selecting seedlings with vigorous growth, well-developed root system, and no diseases or insect pests is the standard for seedlings transplanted in winter. In fact, this standard is applicable in any season.

② The trunk of the seedling should be straight, the crown should be square, the trunk should have few or no scars, the side branches should be evenly distributed, the bark should be bright green, and the overall shape should be beautiful.

③ If you are transplanting evergreen trees, you should choose seedlings whose spring shoots have stopped growing and whose secondary shoots have not yet sprouted. It should be noted that if it is a transplanted seedling, remember that the seedlings cannot be transplanted in the same year and must grow for one year before transplanting.

Pruning branches

Before transplanting, the branches of seedlings must be pruned. Pruning starts from the following aspects:

1. If it is a full crown transplant, 1/2 of the branches of the current year should be cut off, and thinning branches should be done appropriately;

2. If it is a half-crown transplant, all branches over 3 cm in height should be left or shortened appropriately while ensuring the overall tree shape;

3. If you are transplanting by cutting the trunk, just keep the main trunk or a few thick main branches.

Generally speaking, deciduous trees can be pruned by 1/2. Coniferous trees are mainly pruned by thinning branches, with a maximum of 1/3. Evergreen leaves can be pruned by crown reduction, and the branches within the crown can be appropriately thinned. When transplanting and cutting the trunk, apply medicine to the wound of the saw rod to increase the survival rate .

Things to note when planting a tree

If it is a dormant deciduous tree or shrub, you can transplant it bare-root or with some "heart soil". If it is a large tree transplant, you must choose a professional team, and it is best to transplant it with a soil ball to reduce damage.

Three days before transplanting, spray the tree with anti-transpiration agent from the bottom of the tree . If the tree is equipped with a soil ball, the soil ball should be at least 10 times the diameter at breast height. When packaging, the soil ball and tree crown are usually protected with straw rope.
