Corn plant spacing calculation formula (how many corn plants should be planted per acre for high yield)

What is corn plant spacing?

Most crops are planted in rows, which can be divided into equal row planting and wide and narrow row planting. The same is true for corn. The spacing between corn plants refers to the distance between two adjacent corn plants in each row; the row spacing of corn refers to the distance between two adjacent rows of corn .

So what is the spacing between corn plants? How to calculate the spacing between corn plants? How to calculate how many corn plants to plant per acre? Let's take a general look at it below.

Calculate the formula for corn plant spacing per acre

①Single seed sowing fine seeds

Precision sowing plant spacing = 667 square meters ÷ average row spacing ÷ number of seedlings per mu × seed germination rate ; 1 meter = 3 feet = 30 inches.

It is the same if calculated by feet, 1 mu = 667 square meters = 6000 square feet.

For the wide-narrow row method, the average row spacing should be calculated first. When the seeding quality and herbicide-induced seedling loss are large, the plant spacing should be appropriately reduced without thinning. Precision seeding has very high requirements for seed quality. If the germination rate is less than 92%, precision single seeding is not allowed.

②Semi-precision sowing of seeds

Semi-precision sowing plant spacing = 667 square meters ÷ average row spacing ÷ number of seedlings per mu ; 1 meter = 3 feet = 30 inches.

When half-plant spacing or two seeds per hole are used for sowing, the germination rate of seeds is generally greater than 85% but less than 92%. When transplanting seedlings, transplant them according to the plant spacing. If there are not enough seedlings, leave two plants in one hole nearby.

How to calculate how many corn plants to plant per acre

Number of plants = [(field length ÷ plant spacing) + 1] × [(field width ÷ row spacing) + 1]

For example, if a plot of land is 30 meters long and 20 meters wide, and the corn rows are spaced 60 centimeters apart and the plant spacing is 30 centimeters, how many corn plants should be planted?

[(30÷0.3)+1]×[(20÷0.6)+1]=3434 trees.

How many corn plants are there per acre?

The row spacing of corn is 60cm, and the plant spacing is 8 inches, so there are 4166 plants per acre.

Because 8 inches = 26.64 centimeters = 0.2664 meters 666.7÷(0.6×0.2664)=4166 plants. If each corn weighs 300 grams, the yield per mu is about 1200 kg, which is considered a high yield.

8 inches is the plant spacing, and the row spacing also determines the overall description. In the north, the general summer-sown corn population is controlled between 3,200 and 3,500 plants per acre.

Reasonable corn planting density leads to higher yield

The size of corn planting density is one of the factors that directly affect corn yield. Only by taking appropriate measures according to local conditions and selecting a reasonable density based on variety characteristics, yield level, soil fertility and fertilization level can corn yield be maximized.

① Medium-yield fields with an output of 400 to 500 kg per mu

The suitable density for flat corn hybrids is about 3,000 plants per mu; for compact hybrids it is about 4,000 plants per mu.

② Yield level of 500-600 kg per mu

The suitable density range is: about 3,500 plants per mu for flat-leaf corn hybrids; about 3,700 to 4,000 plants per mu for compact medium-late maturing large-ear hybrids; and about 4,500 plants per mu for compact vertical-leaf medium-ear hybrids.

③ Yield level of more than 650 kg per mu

The suitable density range is: compact medium-ear type, 5000 to 5500 plants per mu; compact large-ear type, 4500 to 5000 plants per mu.
