Dianthus planting methods and precautions (tips for caring for potted dianthus at home)

Dianthus planting methods and precautions (tips for caring for potted dianthus at home)

1) The growth temperature of dianthus should be suitable

Dianthus grows best at temperatures between 8 and 20°C, and is mainly propagated by sowing in spring and autumn. The suitable temperature for germination after sowing is between 20 and 22°C, and it will germinate about 5 to 7 days after sowing.

The optimum temperature for seedling growth is 10-20°C; it can withstand low temperatures of 5-8°C in winter, and can bloom all year round with proper maintenance. It takes 9-11 weeks from sowing to growing into mature seedlings.

2) Water management for dianthus potted plants should be relatively dry

When watering carnations, the principle should be "don't water unless the soil is dry, and prefer dry to wet". It is better to keep the soil in the pot on the dry side, and avoid water accumulation in the soil , otherwise it will easily cause root rot and seedling death.

In late spring and summer and autumn, it is necessary to water the plants about once every 10 days, but this is not absolute and should be adjusted according to the actual conditions of the soil.

Note: Before winter, you should water the plant once with antifreeze water, and water thoroughly without accumulating water. The dianthus plant basically relies on this antifreeze water to survive the winter. You can add water appropriately throughout the winter, but don't water it thoroughly.

In the spring of the following year, you should water the dianthus again in spring to allow it to resume growth. When watering it these two times, you must control the amount of watering. Avoid making the soil in the pot soaked with water or watering it halfway, so as to avoid excessive or insufficient water supply, which will affect its growth and development.

3) The fertilizer supply for dianthus should be appropriate

When the dianthus sprouts leaf buds and during the entire growing period, apply compound fertilizer every 3 weeks and pinch the tops of the plants 2 to 3 times to promote more branches and flowering.

The flowering period of dianthus is from May to September. After the first bloom fades, it should be pruned in time to cut off the dead branches and withered flowers to facilitate the next flowering.

Generally, after the dianthus flowers have faded, you should apply Huaduoduo No. 2 diluted liquid fertilizer to them again every week or so, and they will bloom again in September .

In short, for potted carnations, you should pay attention to keeping the temperature at 8~20°C. In late spring, summer and autumn, water them about once every 10 days. Before winter, water them once with "antifreeze water" and once again with "greening water" in spring.

During the growing season before flowering, compound fertilizer should be applied every 3 weeks, and the plant should be pinched several times to promote branching and more flowering. After the flowers fade, apply Huaduoduo No. 2 diluted liquid fertilizer once a week, and it will bloom again in September.
