Begonia propagation method and precautions (lazy man's method of cutting begonia)

The most common method of propagating Begonia is cuttings, which can be used all year round, but is best done in spring and autumn, when the temperature is a little higher.

1. Time for cutting propagation of Begonia

The best time period for cuttings is after April and May, when the temperature is above 20°C, because high humidity and high temperature during this period are very beneficial for cuttings. It is also very simple for novices. In half a month, the cuttings will take root and can be transplanted into the soil after taking root.

2. Selection of cutting medium

The substrate for cuttings is very important, as it determines whether the branches can take root. It is best to use river sand, because sand has good air circulation and will not cause the branches to rot. Before use, you can wash it with clean water and then dry it in the sun to filter out some bacteria.

3. Branch selection

When cutting begonias, we usually choose relatively thick branches and leaves. They have more energy and are easy to take root. It is best to have two leaves on the branches.

After selecting the branches, the roots need to be trimmed, and the branches should be kept at about 5-6 cm . The roots should be trimmed into a horseshoe shape, and cuttings should be carried out only after the pruned area is completely dry, otherwise the wound will be infected.

4. Begonia cutting method

Pour the prepared substrate into the flowerpot. If conditions permit, you can make a tool with old bottles, cut the bottle open, and poke some small holes in the bottle.

These small holes can keep the soil well ventilated. Insufficient air circulation may cause the roots to fail to germinate and rot, which is more suitable than using a flower pot.

After the substrate is prepared, you can use chopsticks to poke small holes in the sand. The thickness of the holes should be consistent with the branches to be cut.

Then insert the branch into the sand, the length of which is about one-third of the branch.

Note : There also needs to be a certain distance between branches. The best spacing is about 3 cm. After all are inserted, you can gently press the soil with your hands to make them combine together.

5. Begonia maintenance and management

Unlike other plant cuttings, it is not necessary to water immediately after cutting. You can spray water on the 5th day after cutting. Use a spray bottle to water little by little. The water temperature is also required. The temperature should be similar to the base temperature. The first watering should be thoroughly watered. After watering, put it in the shade and avoid the sun. It will take about ten days for the roots to grow. When the length of the roots reaches about four centimeters, it can be exposed to the sun. At this time, watering should be determined according to the actual situation of the soil. It can be moved to a normal flower pot for cultivation in about a week.

In addition to this method, Begonia can also be propagated by sowing . The most suitable seasons for propagation by planting are spring and autumn, when the temperature is moderate. The division method is also very simple . When repotting Begonia for more than two years in spring, the mother plant and the division can be propagated separately, which is more suitable for home use.
