How to get a high survival rate of hibiscus cuttings

How to get a high survival rate of hibiscus cuttings

Cutting is the simplest method of propagating hibiscus, so it is very suitable for beginners to propagate. Although the steps are more difficult than sowing propagation, it is much easier in the maintenance process. This is because the branches propagated by hibiscus cuttings are easier to take root and sprout, while hibiscus seeds are difficult to take root and sprout, so cutting propagation is simpler and more effective.

Hibiscus cutting time

Hibiscus cuttings are generally best taken in spring and autumn, which is also the period with the highest survival rate. Spring cuttings are mainly carried out after March and April each year, and autumn cuttings are taken after the plants shed their leaves, usually in late autumn and early winter.

Hibiscus cutting method

Hibiscus can also be propagated by cuttings. Before cutting, prepare moist sandy soil or clean river sand, choose strong branches that are 1-2 years old as cuttings, and soak the prepared cuttings in a diluted potassium permanganate solution for disinfection before cutting. Then insert the cuttings directly into the soil. After the cuttings are completed, water the plants in time and cover them with plastic film to maintain the environmental humidity and prevent water evaporation. After about a month, the plants will take root and sprout.

Hibiscus cutting rooting

If you want hibiscus cuttings to take root quickly, you need to select strong cuttings from the current year from the mother branch, remove the leaves at the bottom of the cuttings, and cut the bottom into a 45-degree angle. Then dip the fleshy stems of the hibiscus cuttings in rooting powder, and finally insert the branches into sandy loam with good air permeability. Press the soil tightly with your hands. Cuttings planted in this way will allow the hibiscus to take root quickly.
