What kind of turtle is good to keep at home? How to raise it?

Turtles are not only a symbol of longevity, but also in Feng Shui it is believed that keeping a turtle at home can ward off bad luck and dispel evil spirits. Therefore, many people like to keep a turtle at home. So what kind of turtle is good to keep at home? How to raise it? Let’s learn more about it below.

What kind of turtle is good to keep at home?

There are many species of turtles suitable for domestic breeding, such as red-eared sliders, flower turtles, musk turtles, fire turtles, golden coin turtles, etc. But here we recommend that you raise Chinese soft-shelled turtles. As a native turtle species in my country, the Chinese soft-shelled turtle has a long history, is cheap, is raised by a large number of people, is easy to breed, and is very suitable for raising at home.

How to raise Chinese soft-shelled turtle?

1. Breeding environment

Mainly containers and water. You need a container that can hold water (seems like nonsense), such as a washbasin, bucket, bathtub, washtub, etc. at home. Of course, it would be best to have a storage box. If there are many turtles, you need to raise them separately or separate them with a partition net. As for water, you can use tap water that has been left to air dry for more than 2 days (to remove chlorine). It is best to prepare 2 plastic buckets for air drying, which can meet the needs of water changes. The water level can be determined according to the size of the turtle, and generally should not exceed twice the height of its carapace.

2. Water change method

When raising grass turtles, you need to change the water regularly. You can use a siphon to clean the feces and residual bait in the fish tank , and then replace one-quarter of the water. Note that the temperature is lower in winter, so when changing water, make sure the temperature of the new water is consistent with that of the water in the tank.

3. Feeding tips

Grass turtles are omnivorous animals. They can be fed various aquatic turtle foods, as well as fish, shrimp and meat. For adult grass turtles, they can also be fed fruits and vegetables occasionally. When feeding, pay attention to the timing and quantity. The amount of food each time should be enough for the turtle to finish within 5 minutes, and the best time to feed is before changing the water.

4. Hibernation management

When hibernating grass turtles in a domestic environment, we should also pay attention to the three factors of temperature, humidity and safety. When hibernating, it is best to place the turtle in an environment with a stable temperature (preferably around 5°C), which can keep the turtle moist and make it feel safe. When the temperature in spring stabilizes at above 15℃, grass turtles will end their hibernation and begin to come out of sleep one after another.

In general, many turtles are tough and easy to raise, making it easy for beginners to get started, but the one that is most commonly raised is the Chinese soft-shelled turtle. The breeding method is also very simple. If you pay attention to some details, it is easy to raise it into good condition.
