How to prune sunflowers, pruning method diagram

1. Topping and pinching

The growth rate of sunflowers is relatively fast, so pruning should begin from the seedling stage. The time is chosen in spring. When 8 to 10 leaves have grown, you need to pinch off the top of the main stem. This will save a lot of nutrients and promote the growth of the main stem and side branches.

2. Pruning branches

During the growing period, the branches need to be pruned, and some branches that are too dense, diseased and insect-infested, dead branches, overgrown branches, thin branches, and crossed branches should be cut off. This can avoid unnecessary nutrient consumption, and also promote better ventilation and light transmission of the plants, so that they can bloom better and prolong the flowering period.

3. Prune leaves

In addition to pruning the branches, you also need to prune the leaves. If you find diseased leaves, dead leaves, or leaves that are too dense, you should cut them off. This will promote better growth of branches and leaves, reduce diseases and pests, make the plant shape more beautiful, and improve its ornamental value.

IV. Precautions

When pruning, choose a sunny day and avoid rainy weather. Because pruning will cause wounds, if it is a rainy day, the wounds will get wet, which can easily lead to infection and affect recovery. Choose a sunny day to prune and disinfect the wound. Don't rush to expose it to the sun. Put it in a cool place and resume care after the wound is dry to avoid infection.
