When is the best time to sow Shanghai Green?

In the southern region, due to the relatively warm climate conditions, Shanghai Qing can be grown all year round. However, since high temperatures in the summer may slow plant growth, it is more suitable to plant in the spring and autumn when the climate is milder.

For northern regions, due to the relatively cold overall climate, Shanghai Qing requires a relatively warm environment for growth, and the most suitable temperature range is 18 to 20 degrees Celsius. Therefore, growers in northern regions usually choose to plant in three seasons: spring, summer and autumn to ensure that the Shanghai Qing can thrive under suitable temperature conditions.

Cultivation method of Shanghai Green

1. Soil preparation and fertilization

Shanghai Qing does not have high requirements for soil conditions, but the ideal planting site should be an area with fertile soil and convenient irrigation and drainage. During the land preparation process, deep plowing should be carried out and sufficient well-rotted farmyard manure or organic fertilizer should be applied to avoid damage to the roots of the plants.

2. Water and fertilizer management

After the seedlings emerge, the soil needs to be kept moderately moist and watered in time. Shanghai Qing has a greater demand for water during its growth period. It is recommended to water it once in the morning and evening every day, but care must be taken to prevent water accumulation to avoid root diseases. During the growing season, fertilizer should be applied regularly to ensure yield. Compound fertilizer , urea and phosphate fertilizer can be used. The initial fertilizer concentration should be moderate and can be appropriately increased in the later stage. At the same time, organic fertilizer can be sprayed once a week, but fertilization should be stopped two weeks before harvest.

3. Pest and disease control

Shanghai green is susceptible to downy mildew, especially in the hot and rainy summer. The lesions usually appear yellow on the surface of the leaves and have a white mold layer on the back. 25% metalaxyl and cymoxanil wettable powder diluted 1500 to 2000 times can be used for spray treatment, once every 5 to 7 days depending on the condition of the disease.

In terms of pests, aphids and cabbage loopers are the main threats, which can damage the leaves. You can use trichlorfon or malt emulsifiable concentrate for prevention and control. In addition, reasonable crop rotation can also help reduce the occurrence of pests and diseases.

4. Harvest time

To maintain the fresh and tender taste of bok choy, it should be harvested when the plant has 10 to 15 leaves, which usually happens around 30 days after planting. Watering should be stopped before harvesting to facilitate subsequent transportation and storage. Use a mowing knife to cut off 1 to 2 leaves at the base of the plant for marketing.

The above is an introduction to the best planting time and cultivation techniques of Shanghai Green. Shanghai Green is a vegetable variety that people in many places like to eat, and its market prospects are still very optimistic.
