What does the bean worm finally become? It becomes a pupa after being buried in the soil for a few days.

1. What did the bean worm become?

Bean worms are the larvae of the bean moth, and they will become bean moths when they grow up. The bean moth belongs to the family Sphingidae in the order Lepidoptera and can generally reproduce one generation per year. The larval stage is yellow-green and about 90mm long. It is mainly distributed in the Yangtze River Basin, the Huanghuai River Basin and the South China region of my country. It parasitizes on the leaves of soybeans, mung beans, locust trees, acacia trees and grape vines, and will also harm the growth of these plants.

2. How many days does it take to become a pupa after burrowing into the soil?

Most mature larvae overwinter in the upper 9-12 cm layer of soil and move to the surface in the spring of the following year to begin pupating. The specific time is from mid-June to early July every year, which is the peak period of emergence. It takes about half an hour after emergence to become an adult to fly. The adults are very secretive during the day, mostly starting to move in the evening. They have strong flying ability, like to eat nectar, and are phototactic.

3. How to prevent and treat

Before planting crops, the soil should be deeply plowed to eliminate the source of insects. It would be best to change the way soybeans are cultivated, and intercrop them with rapeseed. When the larvae reach the 4th instar stage, they can be captured manually. Adult insects are phototactic and can be killed using black light. If the insect infestation is serious, it is recommended to spray pesticides.
