What to do if Monstera leaves turn black

Symptoms of frost damage to Monstera

The leaves of Monstera that has suffered frost damage will have large dark brown spots, and the roots will also turn from green and white to brown. In severe cases, the petioles may automatically break off the stems, and the cross-section will be covered with many small black spots. If the disease is allowed to develop, the entire Monstera plant will die.

How to solve the problem of Monstera leaves turning black

When Monstera suffers frost damage, measures should be taken immediately from the moment leaf fall is noticed to prevent the spread of rot.

All rotten roots can be cut near the stem. If the black-brown color has invaded the stem, the rotten stem can be cut off section by section until the cut surface of the stem is completely white.

After dealing with the rotten rhizomes, cut off two-thirds of the last leaf on the top, gently cut and peel off the bracts on the petiole with a knife, and use a thin bamboo pole to firmly support the petiole to prevent the tender buds from breaking when it falls off.

After completing these treatments, control watering and keep the soil dry in order to increase the plant's body fluid concentration and increase its resistance to cold. Generally, choose a sunny day at noon every half a month to moisten the surface of the basin with clean water. No fertilizer is needed, and watering can be increased only when new shoots grow in May.

The key points for caring for Monstera in winter include: the minimum temperature must be maintained above 5°C; it cannot be exposed to cold winds; the potting soil cannot be too dry or too wet, but should be slightly drier; it must have a certain amount of sunlight and receive scattered light.
