Field Management Technology of American Ginseng

Field Management Technology of American Ginseng

American ginseng is a traditional Chinese medicinal material with good medicinal value. It has a large market demand and is artificially cultivated in many areas. Below I will introduce to you the field management techniques for growing American ginseng.

1. Build a scaffold

At present, fixed single-bed arched light-transmitting sheds are generally used, a few are fixed multi-bedded light-transmitting greenhouses, or fixed multi-bedded double-turbine sheds, and most of them are arched sheds and bow-shaped sheds.

2. Cover and shade

The key to cultivating American ginseng in farmland is bed covering, which should be 4 to 5 cm thick leaves or 3 cm thick sawdust. Or add reed mats to keep moisture in and weeds out. When American ginseng just emerges from the soil, shade management should be carried out.

3. Loosening the soil and weeding

For American ginseng planted in autumn or grown for more than one year, when the soil thaws in spring and the buds are about to sprout, remove the anti-freeze materials, rake the topsoil, and level the bed surface to a depth that does not damage the buds and roots. During the growing period, the soil should be loosened and weeded frequently. The frequency of loosening should be determined according to the situation. The principle is to keep the field free of weeds and the soil non-compacted. Generally, 3 to 5 times are needed.

4. Topdressing management

After sowing, American ginseng generally grows continuously for 4 years in the same plot of land. The application of base fertilizer alone cannot guarantee its normal growth and development, and top dressing must be applied in time. Especially for 3-4 year old plots, if top dressing is not applied in time, the yield and quality of American ginseng will be affected. After removing the anti-freeze materials, apply 50g of perilla (cooked and crushed), 100g of bean cake powder, and 40g of degummed bone meal per square meter. You can also apply high-efficiency compound fertilizer , 100 to 150 grams per square meter. In addition, foliar fertilization can be carried out 1 to 2 times during the green fruit period.

5. Irrigation and drainage

Adapt to local conditions and do a good job in irrigation and drainage. Irrigation should be done by sprinkler irrigation or pouring, with a general water consumption of 15 to 20 kg per square meter. For 4-year-old plots, proper irrigation about 20 days before ginseng harvesting in autumn can increase ginseng root yield and drying rate. Before the rainy season, clean the field drainage ditches.

6. Picking buds

3-4 year old American ginseng blooms and bears fruit in large quantities. The flower buds should be removed in time in plots where no seeds are left. To keep the seeds in the field for seeds, you must ensure that the seeds are full. You can thin the flowers, which means removing about 1/3 of the flower buds in the center of the inflorescence, leaving only about 30 flower buds on the periphery. American ginseng seeds mature at different times and need to be harvested in batches.
