How to preserve calla lily bulbs

How to preserve calla lily bulbs

Can it survive if all the leaves fall off?

The reason why the leaves fall off is that it has entered a dormant period.

Calla lilies will enter a dormant period in the summer, a completely dormant state in which they will not grow new leaves. The old plants will gradually turn yellow and slowly die. These are the two extremes of plants! Calla lilies gradually die after blooming in February and March every year, but this is just the beginning. As long as the bulbs are well preserved, after the hot summer, sometimes a healthy and beautiful flower will appear.

How to store bulbs

Reduce watering and dig up the bulbs

When Calla Lily begins to dormant, reduce watering. After the leaves naturally die, wait until the soil in the pot is completely dry, then dig the bulb out of the pot.

Soak in medicine and put in refrigerator

Soak the bulbs in antibacterial water, dry them, wrap them with paper (slightly thicker), put them in a cardboard box, and then refrigerate them. The temperature is between 5~7℃.

End of dormancy and replant

Put it in the refrigerator for 2 months, take out the bulb, don’t plant it immediately, keep it indoors for a few days. It’s best to wait until the bulb buds start to emerge before planting. In about 60 days, your Calla Lily will be able to bloom again!

Precautions

When storing bulbs, do not do excessive handling and keep the storage temperature at 5~7℃, otherwise it will easily cause bulb aging and affect growth.

Generally, the bulbs of Calla Lily can only grow continuously for 3 to 4 years before they become old and cannot continue to grow. Its lifespan is so short, so take good care of your beloved plant.
