Pruning makes flowers more beautiful

What are the principles of pruning flowers?

When pruning, don’t forget one principle, which is “leave the outside but not the inside, leave the straight lines but not the horizontal lines”. Cut off diseased and dead branches, crossed branches, overgrown branches, thin and weak branches, overly dense branches and branches that affect the beauty of the plant shape. The buds at the cut grow outwards, and the cut should not be too close to the buds, otherwise they will easily lose water and dry up.

How to thin out?

Thinning refers to the removal of unnecessary branches from the base, mainly removing dense branches, overgrown branches, crossed branches, aging branches, diseased and insect-infested branches. The purpose is to make the branches evenly distributed, improve ventilation and light conditions, regulate the relationship between vegetative growth and reproductive growth, ensure that nutrients are supplied to the retained branches, and promote flowering and fruiting. Thinning should be done obliquely from the upper part of the branch point, leaving no stumps, and the cut should be smooth.

How to shorten it?

Shortening refers to cutting off part of the annual branches, also known as short pruning. Short cutting can be divided into light cutting and heavy cutting according to the degree of cutting.

How to pinch the tips?

Pinching refers to removing the terminal buds of the main or side branches of the plant. Pinching the main branches can inhibit their growth, promote the growth of more side branches, make the plants shorter, stronger, and fuller in shape, and increase the number and location of flowers. Pinching can also delay flowering or encourage it to bloom again.

How to remove sprouts?

Bud removal refers to removing some side buds that consume nutrients. The purpose is to prevent excessive branches from causing nutrient dispersion and ensure that the main branches obtain sufficient nutrients, thereby growing rapidly and producing flower buds. Bud removal can also prevent the plants from being too dense, or prevent some flowers and trees with strong germination ability from growing into shrubs, thereby reducing the beauty of the plants' posture and affecting the ornamental effect.
