Dahlia cultivation methods and precautions

Dahlia cultivation methods and precautions

1. Water

Dahlias have thick, juicy, fleshy roots that are highly aerobic, so the soil must be loose, breathable, and well-drained. If the soil is compacted, waterlogged, and lacks oxygen, it can easily cause root rot or even death.

However, dahlias have many leaves and large flowers, and they consume a lot of water through transpiration, so they need a certain amount of water. If the leaves wilt due to high temperature and dryness, you should water them immediately. Water them thoroughly at one time, and avoid overwatering to prevent waterlogging.

When the sky clears after rain, the leaves of dahlias may wilt. This is mainly because the soil in the pot is too wet, the root hairs are damaged and cannot absorb water, and the leaves lose water through transpiration. However, do not water them immediately at this time. You can spray the leaves with water several times. After the soil dries out slightly, new roots grow, and the absorption function is restored, you can water it normally.

2. Lighting

Dahlias love light and cannot tolerate shade. In an environment with insufficient light and damp conditions, the root system will be relatively weak, the absorption capacity will decrease, the photosynthesis of the leaves will also decrease, the flower buds will not develop completely, the flowers will be small and dark in color, and it may even be difficult to bloom.

If there is a lack of light for a long time, the plant will become weak and easily die. Therefore, during the planting process of dahlias, the environment must ensure sufficient sunlight so that they can grow and develop normally and bloom beautiful flowers.

In a damp environment with insufficient light, the root system becomes weak, the absorption capacity decreases, the leaf photosynthesis is low, the flower buds develop poorly, the flowers are small and dark in color, and it may even be difficult to bloom. If there is severe lack of light for a long time, the plant will become weak and eventually die. Therefore, the dahlia cultivation environment must maintain sufficient sunlight so that it can grow and develop normally and bloom beautiful flowers.

3. Fertilization

Dahlias have strong roots, many large branches and leaves, and require a large amount of fertilizer. When planting, in addition to applying sufficient base fertilizer, top dressing should also be applied in a timely manner. When applying top dressing, apply light fertilizer frequently and avoid applying concentrated fertilizer to prevent root burn and cause dead branches and seedlings.

4. Temperature

Dahlias prefer warmth and coolness and avoid extreme heat. The suitable growth temperature is between 20 and 25℃. Therefore, dahlias grow and develop well in late spring, early summer, late autumn and early winter. But in July and August, the temperature rises, the expansion is slow, and the flowering is poor or stops. Therefore, we must pay attention to the water supply of dahlias in summer to ensure the healthy growth of the seedlings.

5. Notes

Too many large dahlia flowers will result in poor flower quality and a short flowering period, so the flowers should be properly controlled. Therefore, from the beginning of shaping, you must pinch the top of the tree to promote branching. When the branches grow, constantly remove the small buds and only retain the top buds to promote the strength of the branches. After the buds appear, in addition to shortening the branches and retaining a strong bud, cut off the excess buds to ensure that the flowers are large and bright when they bloom.
