How to care for delphinium during its flowering period

When does it bloom?

Delphinium sowing can be divided into spring sowing and autumn sowing. The flowering period of delphinium sown in spring is from July to August, and the flowering period of delphinium sown in autumn is from March to May of the following year.

Apply nitrogen fertilizer before flowering, apply more phosphorus and potassium fertilizers after flowering, and water appropriately. Increasing lighting after October can promote early flowering. When the plant grows to 20 cm in height, erect a high support and set up a net to prevent it from falling over.

How to care for the flowering period

Watering: Delphiniums prefer a moist growing environment. During the flowering period, it is especially important to avoid the soil in the pot from drying out and ensure the supply of water. Only then can the flowers bloom, bright and beautiful.

Fertilization: Choose nitrogen fertilizer for topdressing before flowering, which can ensure that the flowers are plump and the colors are bright and colorful. After germination, apply more phosphorus and potassium fertilizers to ensure normal growth of the plants, avoid excessive growth and lodging. Fertilize 1-3 times a month.

Pest and disease control: The flowering period is when delphinium attracts bees and butterflies. Be careful of small animals such as bees and butterflies bringing pathogens or insect eggs to the plants, and check them in time. When aphids and moths appear, they must be cleaned up in time and sprayed with pesticides to kill them.

Shaping and maintenance: The main stem must be upright to produce large and beautiful flowers. Avoid breaking the main stem. You can insert a branch or bamboo pole into the flowerpot to serve as a traction device to support the main stem which is under great pressure.

Appreciation of flower shapes

Inflorescences grow at the top of stems or branches; lower bracts are leaf-like, upper bracts are small, undivided, and linear; pedicels are 0.7-2.8 cm long.

The bracts are small and grow near the middle of the pedicel. The sepals are purple, pink or white, broadly ovate, about 1.2 cm long, sparsely covered with short soft hairs in the center, and subulate, about 1.6 cm long.

The petals are three-lobed, the middle lobe is about 5 mm long, with two shallow lobes at the apex, and the side lobes extend at right angles to the middle lobe, ovate; the anthers are about 1 mm long.

Delphinium flowers come in a variety of colors: white is elegant, pink is poetic, blue is melancholy, and purple is elegant and dignified.
