sowing

Sowing method

The seeds can be sown in pots with high humidity and warm temperature in late autumn, or in spring. In southern China, the seedlings can be used to plant flower beds, and flowers can be seen in September of the same year. When the fruit is ripe, pick it and pile it for fermentation. Then soak it in water and rub it to remove the pulp, and the seeds will be obtained.

Seeds should not lose water. They can be sown immediately after being harvested in autumn, or mixed with sand and stored, and then sown in spring. The temperature should be kept above 20°C during the germination stage after sowing. The germination rate is about 60%, and the seedlings sown in the south can bloom in the autumn of the same year.

Seed harvesting

When the fruit is ripe, pick it and pile it for fermentation. Then soak it in water and rub it to remove the pulp, and the seeds will be obtained. Seeds should not lose water. They can be sown immediately after being harvested in autumn, or mixed with sand and stored, and then sown in spring.

Cuttings

Cutting season

Five-color plum is resistant to pruning, and cuttings can be carried out in spring combined with pruning, with May being the best time.

Cutting operation

Take one-year-old branches as cuttings, and make a section with every two nodes. Keep the two leaves on the upper node and cut them in half, and insert the lower node into plain sand or a substrate mixed with half plain sand and half fully decomposed humus. Shade after insertion, cover with film to keep moisture and heat, keep the cutting bed moist and the air humidity at 80% to 90%. It will take about 1 month for roots to grow and new shoots to sprout.

After the seedlings survive, if you want to plant them in an open-air flower bed, you should first plant them in a small flower pot for transition. When the roots of the cuttings grow to about 5 cm long and partially turn brown, transplant them into pots and place them under sparse shade for a period of time. After the new roots are fully developed and white roots extend out of the bottom holes, remove them from the pots and plant them.

If you use the softwood cutting method, it will only take about 20 days for the plant to take root and survive. After rooting and survival, the seedlings should be divided and transplanted as soon as possible to ensure that they absorb sufficient nutrients as soon as possible, which is conducive to growth and early flowering.

Layering

The plant of Prunus armeniaca has many branches and takes root when it touches the soil, so the flexible branches are cut and pressed into the soil, and then the roots are cut off and the plant is divided after the root system grows.
