How to graft hibiscus

How to graft hibiscus

Grafting time

Generally, grafting can be carried out in spring, summer, autumn and even late winter, but it is best to do it when the temperature is most favorable for the formation of healing tissue of this variety, so as to shorten the time from grafting to survival to the shortest possible time.

In this way, the specific grafting period of each variety often has to take into account the temperature required for the formation of healing tissue, and must be flexibly controlled due to differences in climatic conditions in different places.

The best time to graft hibiscus is generally in late spring or early summer.

Steps of grafting

First, choose a healthy golden hibiscus as the rootstock, and select several one-year-old branches from the plant as the grafted rootstock branches, and cut them at an appropriate height. Then, make a straight cut downward on one side of the rootstock branch where there is a small amount of wood.

Then select well-grown big red hibiscus and pink hibiscus branches as scion, cut an oblique cut on one side of the lower end of the scion, and slightly remove some of the cortex on the other side.

After cutting the scion, usually one or two buds should be left. Then the scion should be quickly inserted into the cut of the rootstock branch, aligned with the cambium, and then tied tightly with a plastic tape.

Management after grafting

After survival, appropriately cut off the extra branches of the golden hibiscus (rootstock) so that the big red hibiscus and pink hibiscus can better obtain nutrients and water from the golden hibiscus plants and grow and develop.

After pruning and shaping, a very spectacular flower with flowers of various colors and green leaves is formed. In particular, this double-petaled, colorful large-flowered hibiscus is even more beautiful and lovely.
