What to do if the Phalaenopsis orchid withers

Flowering period

Phalaenopsis is not a plant that blooms easily. It takes about two years for it to grow from a small seedling to bloom. However, its flowering period is still very long. Due to different varieties and different maintenance environments, the flowering time is also different, generally around the Spring Festival, but there will be differences in actual maintenance.

When Phalaenopsis orchid blooms, it usually produces more than a dozen beautiful flowers, and the flowering period can last for 2-3 months. You are welcome to enjoy it. After flowering, it can bloom again if it is cared for.

How to deal with flower fading

Watching beautiful flowers bloom and then wither is a heartbreaking thing, but flowers cannot avoid this process, and I believe the same is true for Phalaenopsis. However, it would be a pity to just discard it like this. In fact, as long as you handle it properly, you can continue to cultivate it and make it bloom again.

The way to deal with Phalaenopsis flowers after they have withered is to cut off the flower stems. Although it sounds simple, there are actually two ways of cutting. The first pruning method is to cut the flower stem from the 4th to 5th node at the base. This pruning method is to allow it to bloom again after 2-3 months. Flower lovers who want to enjoy its flowers again in the same year can do this, but this method of pruning will cause it to consume too much nutrients and will have an adverse effect on its growth in the next year. The second pruning method is to cut off its flower stems from the base. This can minimize the consumption of nutrients, allowing it to recuperate and bloom brilliantly in the second year.

How to care for flowers after they fade

After the Phalaenopsis flower has faded, if you want it to bloom again, you can just cut off the flower stems and take care of it normally. However, you should also note that after a long period of growth, its culture medium will age and need to be replaced in time. Otherwise, the air permeability of the soil will deteriorate, and the roots will not breathe well, causing root rot or even death.

After the Phalaenopsis orchid has withered, you can repot it in May. Pay attention to sterilization and disinfection when repotting, trim the roots, and place it in a well-ventilated and cool place to facilitate its growth.
