Cymbidium orchid cultivation methods and precautions

Cymbidium orchids , also known as tiger orchids, are a diverse species of flower known for their gorgeous blooms and as a popular Lunar New Year flower. During the Chinese New Year, placing a pot of cymbidium orchids at home is both fashionable and popular. Let’s learn about the cultivation methods and precautions of Cymbidium.

1. Maintenance tips

Many people like cymbidium orchids, but don’t know how to care for them. In fact, you can just treat it as an ordinary flower, which is not much different from caring for ordinary orchids . In terms of pots, due to its well-developed root system, it is more appropriate to use a deeper pot. But be careful, the flowerpot should not be too large, the right size can promote better growth. The planting medium must be loose, breathable, fertile, and contain large particles. Some flower lovers use pure tree bark , such as pine bark , to plant cymbidium orchids, and they can also grow them out of the pot.

2. Watering

Cymbidium orchids are more drought-tolerant and do not like humidity. When caring for the plant indoors, watering should be reduced. Many flower lovers only water their cymbidiums when they remember to do so, and they do not need to water them frequently. Frequent watering or watering too often is not conducive to its growth.

3. Lighting

Cymbidium orchids also need sunlight. Some flower lovers place cymbidiums on the terrace for open-air care. They should avoid direct sunlight in the summer and place them in a shaded and ventilated place, because excessive exposure to the sun can cause spots and sunburn on the leaves, affecting their ornamental value.

4. Fertilization

During the growth stage of Cymbidium, especially during its vigorous growth period, it is necessary to ensure sufficient fertilizer and water, and even large amounts of fertilizer and water are needed, so that it can thrive, have a stronger plant shape, and be more likely to re-flower. In fact, it is not difficult to grow cymbidium well. If you follow the above points, it will bloom every year.

5. Notes

In autumn and winter, the cymbidium should be placed outdoors for a period of time to allow it to experience some cold, but it must be moved indoors when the temperature drops below zero. If the temperature is too low, the flower buds are easily frostbitten. When the temperature starts to drop, move it indoors in time and place it in a sunny place.

When caring for it in winter, be sure to place it in a place where the light is not too dark, as this will affect the formation of flower buds. If the wintering temperature is kept between 10 and 25 degrees during the day and around 10 degrees at night, it will be more conducive to its growth and flowering.

In short, many friends who care for Cymbidium orchids mistakenly believe that its flowering is a one-time event and ignore it after the flowering period is over. In fact, as long as you take good care of it and master a few maintenance techniques, the Cymbidium can bloom again in the second year, and there may even be more flower buds and flower arrows, and it may be possible to fill the pot.
