How to plant chives

1. Basic information of leek

Allium serrata, also known as spring star allium, is a monocotyledonous plant native to Argentina. Because it looks very similar to leeks, people named it Huajiu. Because it blooms in spring and its flower shape resembles a star, it is also called Spring Star Chives.

Flowering period: Blooms in spring, starting in March and continuing until June, and is dormant in summer.

Appearance: Its leaves are flat, the plant height is 15~20cm, and it has a fragrance.

Flower colors: white, yellow, pink, blue, light blue, purple, etc. The flowers are numerous and dense, a must-have for those who love florals!

2. Key points for the cultivation of flower chives

Soil: It is best to use a combination of peat soil and perlite, which is both breathable and nutritious.

Sunlight: The sunshine time should not be too long, and it is more suitable to be in a warm and sheltered place.

Water: Water in moderation until the soil surface is slightly moist.

Fertilizer: Cake fertilizer is used as the basic fertilizer, and some bone meal is added. When the flowering period is approaching, more phosphorus and potassium fertilizers should be applied to promote the formation of flower buds.

Planting: It is easiest to plant in autumn. Generally speaking, it can be planted around National Day, but if in the south it can be planted later. Dig a hole in the soil that is about the length of two bulbs and plant the flowers in it. After the flowers have faded, be sure to fertilize normally. Wait until the leaves have completely fallen off, then transfer the bulbs out and wrap them in paper in a cool and ventilated place. Even very small leek bulbs can produce beautiful flowers in the same year if they are carefully cared for.

3. Planting tips

Flower chives are very hardy, so they need less watering and are best placed outdoors. They are a must-have for lazy people.

The flowers are cold-resistant and drought-resistant, and more flowers will bloom if they are placed outdoors and frozen for a period of time.

It usually blooms in mid-to-late October, and in February or March of the second year. The entire flowering period lasts about 40 days.

Generally speaking, the occasional yellowing of leaves is normal. Just pull them out and there is no need to worry too much.

As long as it is properly maintained, it will reproduce very quickly. Pay attention to check whether you need to change to a larger flowerpot.

After such a detailed introduction, I believe you are already a little expert who can grow flower chives by yourself. Go to the flower and bird market and buy a few balls. Next spring you will be able to harvest a large pot of bright flower chives!
