How to grow agave

How to grow agave

1. Breeding environment

(1) Soil: It is best to choose loose loam that is rich in nutrients and has good drainage. Specifically, you can make the culture soil by mixing leaf mold with coarse sand.

(2) Watering: Water is required, but water accumulation is not allowed. During the growth period, sufficient water must be provided and watering can be more frequent. However, it will enter a dormant period in winter, and water must be controlled at this time, otherwise the roots will easily rot.

(3) Light: The plant prefers light and can usually be provided with scattered light. However, it must be shaded in summer, otherwise the color of its leaves will become dull. In winter, sufficient light is best. However, if the location is not well lit, the temperature should not be too high and do not continue watering. Restore sunlight in spring.

(4) Temperature: The optimum temperature is between 15 and 25 degrees. At night the temperature can be slightly lower, between ten and sixteen degrees. The winter temperature should not be lower than five degrees, otherwise it will suffer from frostbite.

(5) Fertilization: The plant does not require much fertilizer and generally only needs to be applied once a year during the growth period. However, if the soil is poor and the plants are not growing well, you can use one or two more fertilizers.

2. Prevent and control pests and diseases

Diseases such as leaf spot and anthracnose can be controlled by using 50% of thiophanate-methyl powder. For insect pests such as scale insects, 80% concentration of DDT emulsifiable concentrate can be used.
