How to propagate camellia

How to propagate camellia

1. Seed propagation

Collect the seeds when the fruit opens in autumn, place them in a ventilated place in the house to dry, and then take out the seeds after the fruit cracks open by itself. Its seed coat is very hard, and the treated seeds can germinate faster. You can cut the seed coat with a knife or soak the seeds in water.

After the seeds are sown, they should be covered with plastic film to prevent water loss, the temperature should be kept at 18-25℃, sufficient light should be ensured, but direct sunlight should be avoided, ventilation should be carried out every day, weeds should be cleared, and pests should be prevented. The seeds will germinate after 1 month.

When the seedlings grow 3 or 4 leaves, you can move them into pots and plant them. Plant one plant in a pot. Place the pots in a ventilated place and water them thoroughly. After seven days, the roots will have taken root in the pots. You can increase the light and apply fertilizer appropriately.

2. Cutting propagation

Choose healthy and strong semi-lignified branches at the top of the crown, about 10 cm in length, remove the leaves below, leaving 2 or 3 leaves on the top, and do cuttings in May or June or September or October. After the branches are cut, they should be grafted immediately. After the grafting is completed, press the soil tightly, water it thoroughly, and place it in a cool and ventilated place. Spray water 1 or 2 times a day to prevent water loss and soil drying out. Maintain the temperature at 20-25℃ and gradually increase the light. After 1 or 2 months, the branches will grow roots and you can move the branches into the pots.

3. Layering propagation

This method can produce larger seedlings, and is simple to operate and easy to survive, but its disadvantage is that it cannot be propagated in large quantities. This method can be carried out throughout the year, but April and June are the most suitable. Specifically, first select healthy and strong branches, and use a knife to carve a ring about 0.5 to 1 cm wide about 30 to 40 cm from the top. Then cover the wound with moist soil and tie it up tightly with plastic bags. After roots grow on the branches, you can cut the branches and plant them.
