How to grow okra

How to grow okra

1. Sowing and seedling raising

It is usually propagated by sowing, preferably in April. Its seeds are highly adaptable and will germinate within a week. Soak the seeds in water for 24 hours before sowing to accelerate germination. Wait until the seeds are about 60% broken before sowing. Cover with 2 cm of soil after sowing. When the seedlings have 3-4 leaves, they can be transplanted.

2. Field Management

Okra needs sufficient nutrients to grow, and it should be fertilized once during the growth period. It has strong drought resistance and needs to be watered once a week, and drainage measures should be taken during the rainy season. In addition, unnecessary side branches should be cut off during its growth to avoid unnecessary consumption of nutrients.

3. Fruit picking and storage

The fruits are usually picked one week after the flowers fade, when they grow to about 8-10cm. It is best to pick the fruits in the morning and evening, and avoid picking them at noon. It is not suitable for storage in a high temperature environment. It should be stored in a 7-10℃ environment and the temperature should not be too low.

4. Prevention and control of pests and diseases

It rarely suffers from diseases and pests, but it is still easy to develop spots during the rainy season. After the weather clears up, you need to sprinkle some lime around the plant to prevent the disease from spreading to other branches and leaves. In addition, diseased branches and leaves should be cut off in time.
