How many days does it take for onions to sprout?

Shallots generally refer to onions , which like to grow in a cool environment. The suitable temperature for germination is around 13 to 20℃, so they are suitable for planting in spring and autumn. So how many days will it take for onions to sprout after being planted? Let’s learn more about it below.

How many days does it take for onions to sprout?

The germination time of shallots (onions) depends on the temperature and soil conditions when they are planted. Generally speaking, under suitable temperature (about 15-20℃) and good soil conditions, it takes about 7 to 10 days for onions to germinate. If temperatures are lower, germination time may be extended. Also make sure the soil is moist but not too wet to avoid seed rot. At the same time, maintaining proper light will also help promote germination.

How to plant onions?

1. Soil selection

Onions need fertile, well-drained soil to grow. Before planting, you should choose terraced fields or gently sloping land with flat terrain, thick, loose, fertile soil and sufficient soil moisture as the planting site, and avoid repeated cropping. At the same time, well-rotted organic fertilizer can be added to the soil to improve soil fertility.

2. Seed treatment

Select healthy, plump onion seeds for sowing. Before sowing, soak the seeds in 40-degree warm water for 3-4 hours, then rub the seeds with your hands to remove the waxy layer on the seed shell, put them in a cool place to dry slightly and then you can sow them.

3. Sowing method

Sprinkle onion seeds evenly on the soil surface, 2-3 seeds in each hole, keeping the row spacing 35 cm and the hole spacing 15 cm. Then cover with a 2-3 cm thick layer of thin soil and compact it lightly to ensure that the seeds are in close contact with the soil and increase the germination rate.

4. Transplanting and planting

When the onion seedlings grow to about 15 cm, they can be transplanted and planted. First, take out the onion seedlings transplanted last year, peel off the dry skin, cut off the old leaves in the middle and upper parts, leave 1-2 cm of fibrous roots, remove the hard knots at the base of the onion seedlings, and grade them for later use. Then plant the prepared onion seedlings into the ditch at a rate of 2 or 1 per hole, with a hole spacing of 20 cm or a plant spacing of about 10 cm, and cover with soil so that the onion heart is slightly exposed. The planting density is generally 7000-8000 holes/667 square meters.

Generally speaking, the germination time of onions after planting is usually around 7-10 days, but this requires suitable planting conditions and management measures to achieve. In addition, sowing management should be strengthened to promote the growth and development of onions and improve the survival rate of subsequent transplanting.
