Passion fruit planting methods and management techniques

Passion fruit planting methods and management techniques

Passion fruit is a tropical and subtropical fruit that has high requirements for the growing environment. The suitable temperature range for growth is 20℃-30℃, and the optimal temperature is 23℃-25℃. Passion fruit is a light-loving plant that requires plenty of sunlight. Let’s learn about the planting methods and management techniques of passion fruit.

1. Planting time

Passion fruit can be grown all year round in areas with mild climates, but the best planting time is spring from March to May and autumn from September to October. The temperature and humidity are suitable during these two time periods, which is conducive to plant growth.

2. Planting Method

1. Select fruit seedlings

It is recommended to plant with fruit seedlings, which have a high survival rate and grow fast. Select fruit seedlings with well-developed root systems, no pests and diseases, and normal growth of young shoots. If you choose to sow, you need to soak the seeds overnight before planting.

2. Land preparation and digging

Choose a sunny, wind-sheltered place with loose, breathable soil rich in humus for planting. Dig holes with a spacing of 2-3 meters between plants. The pits are about 0.6 meters deep and 1.2 meters long and wide. Apply 20 kg of farmyard manure, 0.5 kg of calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer, and 1 kg of peanut bran to each hole and mix them evenly with the soil.

3. Planting in pits

Place the fruit seedlings upright in the pit, cover the roots with soil, compact it lightly and water it thoroughly.

4. Scaffolding

Passion fruit is a climbing plant that needs a frame to support its growth. You can choose a fence frame, trellis, etc. to facilitate fruit picking and ventilation.

3. Management Technology

1. Pruning

After the plant is planted and survives, remove the axillary buds on the main vine to promote its growth. After the main vine is put on the shelf, top it in time, retain 3 primary vines, and promote the secondary vines to bear fruit. After picking, prune fruitless branches, diseased and insect-infested branches, old and weak branches, etc. to reduce nutrient consumption.

2. Fertilization

Fertilization of young trees: After the seedlings are established and survive, spray them with 0.4% diammonium phosphate 2-3 times a week; when the seedlings reach a height of 70 cm, apply 0.1 kg of three-element compound fertilizer to each plant.

Top dressing: Apply 0.2 kg of urea and 0.15 kg of potassium fertilizer to each plant before budding in early March each year; apply 0.25 kg of triple compound fertilizer to each plant after budding.

Fertilization during the flowering and fruiting period: spray 0.25% boric acid solution during the bud stage; during the fruit development period, apply 0.15 kg of urea, 0.3 kg of three-element compound fertilizer, and 0.2 kg of potassium fertilizer to each plant.

3. Watering

Passion fruit likes moisture but is afraid of stagnant water. Water 1-2 times a week during the growing season to keep the soil moist. Watering frequency should be increased during dry seasons.

4. Pest and disease control

Common pests and diseases include powdery mildew, anthracnose, root rot, aphids, red spiders, etc. Take scientific prevention and control measures, such as spraying pesticides , enhancing ventilation, and maintaining hygiene.

To sum up, the growing environment of passion fruit requires warm and humid environment, sufficient light, fertile soil and good drainage. When planting, the planting location and management measures should be selected reasonably according to its growth habits.
