How to grow peony potted plants and precautions

Peony growth habits

Peonies like a sunny, warm, cool and dry environment. They are also tolerant to partial shade and cold, but afraid of direct sunlight. They need to be shaded in the summer and placed in the sun in the winter to receive full sunlight. They are suitable for planting in loose, deep, fertile, high and dry, well-drained neutral sandy loam. The winter temperature needs to be between 5-8 degrees.

Peony potted cultivation method

Potted peonies can be propagated by division and grafting. Division is to directly cut the mother plant into several parts for planting, while grafting is to connect the cuttings to the roots of the peony. Planting peonies requires less water and more fertilizer, so generally water it when it is dry. It is almost unnecessary to water it during the winter dormancy. Top dressing should wait until the next year's growth. In addition, it is necessary to maintain sufficient sunlight.

Watering Peonies

Peony potted plants do not like an overly humid environment, so do not water them too much. Stop watering in winter and keep the soil slightly moist in other seasons. If the air is dry in summer, spray water appropriately. Do a good job of drainage in the rainy season, loosen the soil appropriately, and improve soil ventilation.

Fertilizing Peonies

The soil for peony potting can be a mixture of yellow sandy soil and cake fertilizer, or a mixture of fully decomposed manure, garden soil, and coarse sand. A little thin fertilizer can be applied during the growth period, but be careful not to make the concentration too high.

Peony potted plant pruning

After the flowering period of peony potted plants, you can trim off the remaining flowers and remove all the withered leaves to reduce nutrient consumption. In winter, you can trim the overlapping branches, crossed branches, and diseased and insect-infested branches. Thin branches can be cut short, and overgrown branches can be cut short. During the spring budding period, keep 2-3 tender buds on the top and remove the rest.

Matters Needing Attention in the Maintenance of Peony Potted Plants

After the peony has been cared for for a period of time, its branches and leaves need to be pruned in time. It should not be allowed to grow recklessly. In addition, it is not cold-resistant. If the temperature is low in winter, it is best to move it to a well-lit place indoors and maintain it in full sunlight. This can increase the temperature of the plant itself and help it survive the winter better.
