Peony Growth Environment Conditions and Characteristics

Peony Growth Environment Conditions and Characteristics

Peony Growth Environment Conditions and Requirements

Peony is mainly distributed in Northeast China, North China, Shaanxi and southern Gansu. It is also distributed in North Korea, Japan, the Mongolian People’s Republic and Siberia of the Soviet Union. Peony is a typical temperate plant that likes warmth and is cold-resistant and has a wide ecological adaptability range.

Peony growth temperature

Peonies do not have high temperature requirements, and the plants are highly adaptable to temperature. They can survive in high temperatures of forty degrees in summer and low temperatures of minus twenty degrees in winter. However, it is best to keep the temperature of artificially maintained peonies at around twenty degrees, which can promote the growth and development of the plants.

Peony growth humidity

Because of its fleshy roots, peony is particularly intolerant of waterlogging. Waterlogging for 6-10 hours often leads to root rot. Therefore, peony prefers high, open and relatively dry environments and does not require frequent irrigation.

Peony growing soil

Peony is a deep-rooted plant, so it requires a deep soil layer and thick fleshy roots. It is suitable for loose and well-drained sandy loam. It grows poorly in clay and sandy soil. High soil water content and poor drainage can easily cause root rot.

Peony growth cycle and process

The best time to plant peony is in autumn. Peony is a perennial herb. From seed germination to death, it goes through life processes such as growth, flowering, fruiting, aging and death. This whole process is called the life cycle, also known as the large development cycle, which lasts about 3-4 years.
