When is the right time to sow mustard?

Mustard sowing time

Mustard belongs to the Cruciferae family and Brassica genus. It is sensitive to the ambient temperature. If the ambient temperature is relatively low, the survival rate of mustard will not be high. Therefore, mustard is usually planted in summer and autumn, and the best time is around October.

How to sow mustard

Mustard seeds need to be germinated and planted in the soil after new shoots sprout. The distance between each seedling should be about 7 cm. One strong seedling can be planted in each hole, with the taproot perpendicular to the center of the hole. Then fill the hole with soil, water it thoroughly, and place it in semi-shade.

Tips for growing mustard greens

1. Mustard will generally sprout 3-5 days after sowing. When the seedlings emerge for about 20 days, thinning should be carried out. Pull out the seedlings in densely populated areas and plant them in sparse areas. When transplanting, the seedbed should be watered thoroughly first, but no water accumulation should occur.

2. Timely watering and fertilization are needed during the growth period to meet its nutritional needs. Light tillage and weed removal are also required according to the condition of the seedlings. If cabbage loopers and aphids appear, pesticides need to be sprayed in time for prevention.

Ripe mustard harvest

Mustard grows very fast, taking about 30 days from sowing to harvesting. If planted in October, it can be harvested in November, with a yield of about 1,000 kilograms per mu.
