How long is the growing cycle of sorghum?

Introduction to Sorghum Growth

The production areas of sorghum are mainly concentrated in the Qinling Mountains, north of the Yellow River and north of the Great Wall. It is widely distributed in China. It is also called starch, peach millet, and wood millet. It is an annual herbaceous plant of the Poaceae family.

Sorghum Growth Cycle

The growing period of sorghum is between 130 and 140 days. It likes warmth and light, and requires sufficient light throughout its entire growth period. Its root system is relatively developed, and the root cells can absorb water from the soil.

Sorghum growth rate

Sorghum grows very fast and is divided into early-maturing, mid-maturing and late-maturing varieties. The growth cycle of early-maturing varieties is generally 3-4 months. Its quality is higher but the yield is low. The growth cycle of mid-maturing varieties is generally between 4-5 months, and the growth cycle of late-maturing varieties is longer, generally around 6 months.

Sorghum Growth Cycle Management

The yield of sorghum per mu is generally 700-900 kg. The optimum temperature for seed germination is 18-35℃. In production, the average temperature of 12℃ 5 cm above the ground can be used as the temperature indicator for timely sowing.

Fertilization management: Sorghum is a fertilizer-loving crop. It should be given fully decomposed organic fertilizer as base fertilizer, more organic fertilizer or inorganic fertilizer, and two topdressings. In the later stage of growth, the leaves can be sprayed with phosphorus and potassium fertilizers.
