How to plant freesia? Planting time and method

Freesia planting time

The planting time of freesia is generally in autumn, which is September to October every year. The specific time is determined by climatic conditions. Generally, the temperature drops quickly in the northern region, so it can be planted in September.

Freesia planting method

1. Prepare bulbs: Bulbs are the key factor in the success of freesia planting. Select high-quality, full bulbs. If you want them to germinate early, the bulbs must be larger and healthier, with no damage on the surface and no impact from diseases and pests. Such bulbs will have a higher germination survival rate.

2. Process the bulbs: After preparing the bulbs, remove the outer skin to expose the healthy part, prepare a lot of bacterium-methyl solution, and then soak the bulbs for a while to disinfect and sterilize them.

3. Prepare the potting soil: The prepared flowerpot does not need to be too large, as long as it can accommodate the growth of the bulb. There should be holes at the bottom for drainage. The soil must be well prepared. It can be mixed with leaf mold, garden soil, sand, bone meal, etc., and it must be disinfected and sterilized in advance.

4. Planting in pots: Fill the pot with soil, dig a small hole in the middle of the soil, and plant the freesia bulbs in it. Do not plant too deep. The top should be about 1-2 cm exposed above the soil surface. Cover it with a 2-3 cm layer of soil and do a good job of maintenance and management in the later stage.

How to plant the freesia I just bought

1. Change the soil: If freesia wants to thrive, it needs sandy soil with good drainage and rich in organic matter. The soil sold by merchants may not be fertile enough, so it is necessary to change it in time.

2. Watering: After buying freesia, you need to water it in moderation, not too much. Wait until it adapts to the new environment before watering it normally. Be careful not to cause water accumulation.

3. Fertilization: Freesia likes fertilizer and requires sufficient nutrients for its growth. You can apply phosphorus, potassium and organic fertilizers to promote the growth of the plant, but the concentration cannot be too high, otherwise it will burn the roots.

4. Temperature: Freesia is not cold-resistant. After buying it, it should be placed in an environment with a temperature of 15-20 degrees. If the temperature is too high, it needs to be cooled down.

How to grow freesia quickly

1. Soil: During the maintenance of freesia, use sandy soil with good water retention and drainage, and fertile acidic soil rich in organic matter. You can use a mixture of humus soil, garden soil and sandy soil.

2. Watering: Do not water freesia frequently at the beginning. After the leaves grow, water it as long as the soil is dry to keep the soil moist. Water more in summer and reduce watering in winter.

3. Fertilization: Freesia likes fertilizer and needs to be applied in appropriate amounts. Phosphorus and potassium fertilizers as well as decomposed organic fertilizers can be applied to promote flowering, prolong the flowering period, and make the flowers more colorful.

4. Temperature: Freesia has poor cold resistance. During maintenance, it is best to provide it with an environment between 15 and 20 degrees. The temperature in winter cannot be lower than zero, and the minimum should be controlled at around 5 degrees. In addition, during high temperatures in summer, pay attention to more ventilation and watering to cool down.

Precautions for freesia potted cultivation

When caring for and managing freesia potted plants, if the environment is not suitable or the methods are inappropriate, it is easy to cause diseases. The most common ones are mosaic disease and bulb rot. When discovered, spray medicine in time to control them. In addition, the bulbs must be disinfected when repotting every year.
