How to prune peonies after they bloom

Pruning Peonies After Blooming

Proper pruning of peony flowers after each flowering can promote the second flowering of the plant. After flowering, some of the remaining flowers on the plant can be removed to reduce nutrient consumption. When pruning, we should start with the following points:

1. Pruning branches : When pruning the branches of peonies, first cut off the dead and diseased branches, then the thin and weak branches, and keep the strong branches.

2. Prune the dead flowers : After the peony withers, the dead flowers should be pruned so that the new flowers can bloom normally and maintain their beauty for viewing.

3. Remove the dead leaves : Peonies need to remove the dead leaves in autumn and winter. If they are not cleaned up in time, diseases and insect pests may occur.

Peony pruning flowering

Peony has a strong ability to adapt to the environment. Generally, the climate will gradually warm up in early spring. At this time, the buds should be properly pruned, and 2 to 3 buds should be retained on the top of the branches, so that they can grow more vigorously in spring.

How to care for peony after flowering

After each blooming of the peony, the amount of watering should be appropriately increased. The specific amount of watering should be based on the dryness and wetness of the potting soil. Fertilization should also be combined with pruning. At this time, try to use more chemical fertilizers. It is best to apply a thin compound fertilizer solution every 7 to 10 days.

How to make peony bloom more

1. Temperature : If you want the peony to bloom more, you must keep the temperature between 16 and 20 degrees. At this temperature, the peony will easily bloom. If it is lower than 16 degrees or higher than 30 degrees, it will be difficult for the peony to bloom. Therefore, in summer, you must move the peony to a place with suitable temperature, good light and ventilation, and cool the peony appropriately.

2. Sunlight : Peony is a sun-loving plant, so you must give it enough sunlight, but don’t expose it to direct sunlight.

3. Fertilization : Special attention should be paid to fertilizing peonies. In addition to applying an appropriate amount of potassium dihydrogen phosphate before it blooms, sufficient fertilizer should also be applied after it blooms, which will be of greater help to its flowering next year.
