How long does it take for yew cuttings to take root?

Rooting time of yew cuttings

Yew can be propagated by cuttings in May and June, with the best time being in May when the survival rate is highest. Cuttings should be taken when the new branches grow 5 to 10 cm, which gives the highest survival rate. Cuttings taken in January and August are not easy to survive and have the lowest survival rate. Cuttings can be taken all year round if rooting powder is used.

After half a month of cuttings of yew, the plugs become thick and nodules appear. Some plugs rot, but nodules can still grow. Nodules are generally formed in about 28 days, and more roots will grow in 30-45 days.

Determine the rooting of yew cuttings

The rooting of yew can be judged by whether the branches and leaves are bright green and not dry after they survive. If the leaves are emerald green and growing well, it means that the cuttings have been successful. If the leaves are slightly yellow and wilted, it means that the cuttings have not been successful.

Rooting method of yew cuttings

1. Choose branches: For yew cuttings, you need to choose suitable branches. Select strong and tough woody branches that are 1 to 4 years old. Don’t choose branches that are too thick or new. Cut them with scissors and cut them into about 10 cm long.

2. Processing of branches: For the cut yew branches, all the leaves on the lower part need to be removed, and then the cut branches should be soaked in rooting water. After about 12 hours, take them out, dry them and wait for cuttings.

3. Soil for cuttings: Yew likes a loose, fertile, well-drained growing environment. In fact, the best soil is some rough soil such as sandy soil and perlite. A clay pot with good drainage can be used as the flower pot.

4. Cutting method: Insert the processed cuttings into the soil of a new flowerpot, 3 to 4 cm into the soil, then place the flowerpot in a cooler environment, keep the environment ventilated, and water the soil until the roots are wet. Then you can wait for it to slowly take root and sprout. Basically, after 30 to 40 days, the yew seedlings will take root and survive.

Management of Yew Cuttings

1. For yew trees, you can soak the cut branches in rooting water and take them out after about 12 hours.

2. After the yew cuttings have taken root, they can be exposed to the sun and the temperature should be controlled between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius. It is best to provide diffuse light but no strong light.

3. After the cuttings of the yew have taken root, you can fertilize it. You can use a small amount of foliar fertilizer, such as 99% pure potassium dihydrogen phosphate. It must be an authentic pure product. Spray the leaves with 1500-2000 times the liquid, once every 7-10 days, and it can be used 4-5 times.

4. When taking cuttings of yew, you must water it in small amounts. Except for the first time of watering the rooting water, you can wet the soil. Then, just spray water on the plant and the soil three times a day in the morning, noon and evening. After one month, you can slowly increase the frequency to once a day.
