Method of preserving seeds of Atractylodes lancea

Atractylodes lancea is also known as spearhead vegetable, red atractylodes, etc. The seeds of the plant grow in obovate achenes. The seeds need to be picked in time after they mature, but its seeds are short-lived, with a lifespan of only about half a year, and need to be stored in a low temperature environment.

The fruits of Atractylodes lancea mature from June to October. Choose well-growing plants for seeds. After picking the fruits, rub out the seeds and remove impurities. Then select the plants with full seeds and no diseases or pests for seeds.

Atractylodes can be propagated by sowing, division, etc. No matter which method is used, the best planting time is around April. If the planting environment is suitable, the seeds will germinate in about 15 days.

1. Land preparation and fertilization

It is best to plant Atractylodes seeds in loose, fertile, deep, well-drained, slightly acidic loam. Sandy loam and humus soil can be used. Note that about 2,000 kilograms of farmyard manure should be applied per acre, and weeding should be done before planting.

2. Sowing

Atractylodes seeds can be planted in rows. Dig horizontal furrows on the bed surface and then sprinkle the seeds evenly in them. Cover with soil and grass after sowing. Water frequently in the later stage to maintain humidity.
