Platycodon grandiflorum planting time and method

Platycodon grandiflorum planting time

Platycodon grandiflorum has a strong adaptability to the environment and is suitable for planting in autumn, winter and spring, but it is best to sow it in autumn from September to October and in spring from December to April of the following year. At this time, the seedlings will germinate in an even manner, grow fast and have a high yield.

Platycodon grandiflorum planting method

1. Site selection and land preparation

Choose sunny, deep-soil sloping land or well-drained flat land to plant Platycodon grandiflorum. Deeply plow the land to a depth of more than 30 cm. Combine land preparation with application of sufficient base fertilizer, soil fertilizer, urea, diamine, and potassium sulfate. Level and harrow the land, and clear the drainage ditches around it.

2. Seed selection

Choose 2-year-old Platycodon seeds for planting. These seeds are large, plump, and dark in color. They have a high germination rate after sowing, grow quickly, and have a high yield. Soak the seeds in 50-60 degree warm water, stirring constantly, and float out the soil, shriveled seeds, and impurities. Then soak the seeds in 0.3% potassium permanganate solution for 12 hours to increase the germination rate.

3. Planting seeds

Platycodon is sown in rows with a sowing width of 10 cm. 400 grams of seeds are used per mu. After sowing, cover with a layer of wood ash and fine soil, water appropriately, and cover with thin grass to keep warm and moist. Remove the grass after the growth begins. Thin out the seedlings when they are 2 cm tall, and transplant them when they are 3-4 cm tall. It is advisable to leave one strong seedling at a distance of 10-14 cm. Platycodon should be weeded 1-2 times during the seedling stage.

Platycodon grandiflorum planting precautions

When the Platycodon seedlings grow to about 10 cm, control the water appropriately. In spring and autumn, water them once every 3-4 days. In summer, water them once every evening around 5 pm. Do not water them in winter. Fertilize them with superphosphate 1-2 times a year before flowering to ensure bright colors. Provide appropriate shade after flowering to prolong the flowering period. Cut off the flower stems in time after the flowers wither, and apply bean cake liquid fertilizer once to promote root growth.
