Time and method of cuttings of azalea

Rhododendron cutting time

Azalea can be propagated by cuttings in May and June, which is the late spring and early summer. The climate is suitable at this time and the survival rate of cuttings is the highest. However, due to different azalea varieties, the time of cuttings also varies. The cutting time for western azalea is in late May, for spring azalea is in early June, and for eastern azalea and summer azalea is in mid-June.

Rhododendron cutting method

1. Prepare the culture soil

It is best to use slightly acidic soil for azalea cuttings. Prepare peat soil, garden soil, and coconut coir, and mix them evenly in a ratio of 4:3:3 as culture soil. Expose the soil in the sun for 1-2 days in advance and disinfect it.

2. Choose cuttings

Choose semi-lignified branches, be careful not to use sick and weak branches, with a length of 10-15 cm, retain 2-3 buds, cut off the branch leaves, retain 2-3 leaves, and cut into half-leaf shapes. Use sterilized scissors to cut the bottom of the branch into an oblique cut, and place it in a cool and ventilated place to dry for later use.

3. Cuttings

Prepare a container of suitable size, fill it with culture soil, poke a few holes with a wooden stick, about 4-5 cm deep, insert the trimmed azalea branches into the holes, compact the surrounding soil, water it thoroughly, and place it in a place with scattered light to wait for rooting.

Maintenance of azalea after cutting

After the azalea is cut, it will take about 50-60 days for it to take root. After taking root, you can remove the plastic film on it. After another month, the root system will be fully grown. At this time, you can plant it in pots. It is best to plant it in a pot with a diameter of 10 cm. After potting, place it in a warm and sunny place.
