Can potatoes be grown all year round? How many seasons can they be grown in a year?

The origin of potatoes is in the Andes Mountains in South America. They were later introduced to Southeast Asia and then to China. The main potato growing areas in China are distributed in Dingxi City, Gansu, Guyuan City, Ningxia, Southwest China, Inner Mongolia and Northeast China.

Potato planting time

Potatoes cannot be planted all year round because potatoes prefer a cool growing environment and are suitable for planting when the temperature is between 17-21 degrees. If the ambient temperature is low, it is difficult to germinate. If the temperature is too high, the roots will rot, which is not conducive to later growth.

The time for potato planting depends on the temperature. The best time for spring planting is from March to April each year , and the best time for autumn planting is from September to October. If you take good warming measures in winter, you can plant in December to January.

Potato growing temperature

Potato seed potatoes can germinate and grow when the soil temperature is 5-8 degrees, and the most suitable temperature is 15-20 degrees. The suitable temperature during the growth period is around 20 degrees. If the soil temperature is higher than 25 degrees, it will be unfavorable for the growth of tubers. The suitable growth temperature for its leaves is 15-25 degrees, and the temperature above 35 degrees is also not conducive to its growth.

Potato growth cycle

The whole growth process of potato can be divided into six periods: dormancy, germination, seedling, plant growth, tuber formation and maturity, which generally lasts 60-100 days. The specific time depends on its variety. Usually, the growth cycle of early-maturing potato is about 60 days, that of mid-maturing potato is about 80 days, and that of late-maturing potato is about 100 days.
