How to plant sprouted potatoes in pots

In spring, potatoes bought at home often sprout. Sprouting potatoes will produce potato toxins and cannot be eaten, but don't throw them away, sprouted potatoes can be planted.

Friends living in rural areas can cultivate a small vegetable garden in front of or behind their houses and plant potatoes in it.

Friends living in cities also use unused flower pots to plant potatoes in them. They grow them as green plants and can eat them after harvesting.

First, potato seeds

First, we cut the sprouted potatoes into pieces, making sure that each piece has at least one full bud. Then apply plant ash to the wound for disinfection, and place it in a cool and ventilated place for two days to allow the wound to shrink and prevent the potatoes from becoming moldy and rotting after planting.

Second, pot soil

Potatoes like loose and breathable sandy loam. When preparing potting soil, we can choose leaf mold or peat soil mixed with river sand and other granular soil, and then mix 10% garden soil. As long as the soil is loose, breathable and nutritious, potatoes can grow slowly in it.

Third, planting

When planting, we put the dried potatoes with the buds facing up in the prepared soil. Try to choose a larger flower pot, and put some organic fertilizer such as dry chicken manure or dry sheep manure at the bottom of the pot.

Place the potatoes carefully so as not to damage the buds, and cover them with 2 to 3 cm of soil.

Finally, water it with carbendazim and place it in a well-ventilated and light-scattered place. It will sprout in about a week.

Fourth, maintenance

When the potato sprouts break through the soil, we should let it get as much sun as possible, preferably full sun, which can effectively prevent the plant from growing too tall.

Because potatoes grow very fast, if they lack light, the plants will grow too tall, with thin internodes, and grow crookedly, which is very ugly.

Potatoes don't like water very much, so they need to be kept dry. Wait until the soil in the pot is completely dry before watering it thoroughly to avoid moisture and water accumulation in the pot. As the potatoes grow, we need to keep cultivating the soil.

Avoid letting the potatoes on the surface of the pot be exposed to the sun. If the potatoes are exposed to the sun, they will turn green and become inedible.

During the entire growth period of the potatoes, we only need to let it get as much sun as possible, water it thoroughly when the soil in the pot is dry, and let it grow naturally.

Fifth, Harvest

The most interesting and anticipated thing about growing potatoes in pots is harvesting them. It takes about two months from germination to harvest.

When the leaves of the potatoes begin to turn yellow and the branches begin to dry, we should stop watering and harvest the potatoes. In one flower pot, we can harvest a lot of potatoes of different sizes.

Special reminder:

1. During the growth process, if necessary, you can restrain the wild growth or leggy growth of the seedlings by topping them, so that the seedlings can grow stronger and the potatoes can be larger.

2. Ensure good light and ventilation during the growth process, otherwise the plants may grow lushly but the potatoes may be very small. At this time, you will probably cry.

3. Potato fertilization should be mainly organic fertilizer, because organic fertilizer is rich in organic matter, which can greatly improve soil fertility, facilitate the growth and expansion of potato tubers and the absorption of organic matter by the roots.
