Can blueberries be propagated by cuttings?

Blueberries are rich in nutrients, taste sweet and sour, and are very popular. They are also relatively easy to grow. The main methods of propagation include division, layering, seed propagation, and cutting propagation. In order to ensure the quantity and quality, hardwood cutting propagation is generally used.

Blueberry cutting propagation

Blueberries can be propagated by cuttings, which is a commonly used propagation method. It is simple to operate and has good results. However, if you want to increase the survival rate of cuttings, you need to choose the right time for cuttings and master the cutting techniques.

Blueberry cutting time

The best time for blueberry cuttings is from February to April every spring. This is the watering season for blueberries. Once the blueberries are cut, they can quickly absorb nutrients and water, and the healing tissue recovers quickly, and new roots can be produced in 10-20 days.

Blueberry cutting propagation method

1. Choose branches: Cut disease-free and insect-free branches with buds from healthy blueberry mother plants. When pruning, it is best to choose semi-lignified branches in the middle and lower parts of the branches. The length of the branches should be 20-30 cm.

2. Process the branches: cut the bottom of the blueberry branches diagonally to increase the nutrient absorption area, then remove the leaves on the lower half, leaving 2-3 leaves on the upper half, and soak the branches in potassium permanganate solution for about 10 minutes.

3. Cutting method: Dip the bottom of the processed blueberry branches in rooting powder, then insert them vertically into the soil, and compact the soil around the branches. Place them in a place without direct sunlight for a week. After the blueberry branches take root, move them to sufficient sunlight for additional light.
