What fertilizer to use for Clivia

What fertilizer to use for Clivia

Clivia is one of the more common flowers in my country. Although it contains the word "orchid" in its name, it is actually very different from an orchid. It is native to southern Africa. During the growing period of Clivia, in addition to watering it frequently to keep the soil moist, it also needs to be fertilized. Moreover, its growth characteristics are that it likes fertilizer, and there are many types of fertilizers that can be used to fertilize it.

Fertilizer for Clivia

During the growth process of Clivia, nitrogen fertilizer, phosphorus fertilizer or potassium fertilizer is needed. These fertilizers can be prepared by yourself. Mix bean cake fertilizer and soybean crops to become nitrogen fertilizer. Phosphorus fertilizer can be prepared with fish scales, bone meal and poultry manure. Potassium fertilizer can be prepared with wood ash and straw ash.

1. Manure

Manure usually refers to the feces of livestock and poultry. The most common one is chicken manure. This fertilizer itself is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, which can supplement nutrients for plant growth. It also has a long effective period and is suitable as a base fertilizer for Clivia.

2. Bone meal

Bone meal is processed animal bones, which mainly contains phosphorus. Bone meal breaks down slowly, so the fertilizer effect lasts particularly long. In addition to being used as base fertilizer, it can also be applied to Clivia during topdressing. Dig the soil in the pot 2-3 cm deep and apply the bone meal into it, but not too close to the roots.

3. Liquid fertilizer

Liquid fertilizer replenishes quickly. In order to avoid fertilizer burns on plants, it needs to be diluted with water. Small seedlings need 40 times the amount of water, medium seedlings need 30 times the amount of water, and large seedlings need 20 times the amount of water. Do not water before fertilizing. After fertilizing, water once every 1-2 days to help absorption.

4. Fertilizer

Compared with the above-mentioned organic fertilizers, chemical fertilizers cannot be produced, but they can be purchased, and are generally used as foliar fertilizers. They do not need to be applied to the roots, so they will not cause fertilizer damage. Fertilizers mostly include urea, potassium dihydrogen phosphate and superphosphate, etc., which can supplement specific nutrients.

Clivia fertilization method

The fertilizers for Clivia are composed of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus fertilizers, so there is some targetedness when fertilizing Clivia. Nitrogen fertilizer is used for Clivia that has been growing for less than three years, which can make the branches and leaves of Clivia strong and also produce flower buds. Phosphorus fertilizer is used before bud formation, which can make the flower buds of Clivia appear earlier. Potassium fertilizer is mainly used after the pollination of Clivia flowers is successful, which can ensure the better development and growth of Clivia embryos.
